Need to get some words in? The Weekend Writing Marathon (WWM) is a writing challenge designed to help you do just that. You set your own writing goal for the weekend and work to achieve it before reporting back to the group on Sunday night.

How do I participate?

1. Reply to this post with your weekend writing plans–be as specific (or not) as you’d like.

2. Start writing on Friday 12:01 am local time. Work to meet your goal by Sunday night at 11:59 pm local time. You can work on whatever you want during this time.

3. Post your accomplishments to the Finish Line post at the end of the weekend (even if you didn’t reach your goal).

How do I report my accomplishments?

A Finish Line post will go up on Sunday. Reblog that post with your final word count/accomplished goal(s) by Monday at midnight local time.

This challenge is currently running on 3 platforms: discord, pillowfort and dreamwidth. If you sign up on this platform, please respond to the Finish Line post on this platform.

Let us know if you have any questions!

( I know it’s not my turn, but it’s been a week. And A Day. )

Write a couple paragraphs of your characters having a bad or just weird day. Describe the day or at least part of it and how they handled it.

Back again, sorry

Haven't posted in a while. I know I say that pretty much every time I post, and I'm just struggling to get back into any kind of posting pattern. Work has continued to be pretty busy, and when I get home I just want to be lazy and not put any effort into anything. I've been having some depressive episodes lately. Greg and I went to Michigan for a few days a couple weeks ago. For about the past month, my afternoons and early evenings have been spent helping with flood recovery. I live in the Ravenswood neighborhood, which was one of the areas hit hardest by the flooding in Indianapolis on August 15th. I am fine and my house is fine; the flooding didn't reach my block. But a lot of my neighbors lost everything, so I have been doing what I can to help with cleanup, organizing donations, and whatever is needed to help with recovery. That has often left me too tired in the evenings to do much more than shower and go to bed. I might talk some more about that in a later entry. And due to the flooding I was without internet for two straight weeks.

I'll also catch up on the garden posts. I really wanted to be more timely with those this year. I have pictures for August 1st and August 15th, I just need to post them. I didn't take any for September 1st, because at this point the garden is slowing down so I think I can go back to just once a month and do a post for September 15th instead.

But in this entry I'm going to talk about books. You may have noticed (or not) that I haven't posted a monthly roundup in a while. I have been in a serious reading slump all summer, but I have managed to read some things. The plan is to make a big summer round-up, so I'll be working on that.

August was the month of DNFs, and I can't decide if I really just started a bunch of duds in a row, or if I've just been too tired/distracted/impatient to give these books the attention they deserve. But there are two new books I bought recently that I tore through in just a couple days, so the takeaway is that when I'm excited to read a book, I should probably just read it instead of sticking it at the bottom of the TBR pile to get to whenever I get to it.

I let all my e-books I had borrowed from the library lapse. I need a reset there because it's just been one disappointment after another, and I don't know if that's the fault of the books or me just getting tired of reading on my phone. I might go back to just borrowing one at a time; I think part of the problem is that I always had four or five books sitting in my Libby app and lately seeing them all just makes me tired. Especially when I'm not enjoying one or more of them but feel compelled to slog through a few chapters just to "earn" some time with a book I actually like. I don't know why I'm like this. I just need to be better at DNFing. I also want to clean out my tags on Libby and just remove books that are not sparking my interest. A lot of them have been on there for years, because I keep adding more and more each year but not getting through even a fraction of what I add. There are so many books that sound interesting, but I cannot actually read them all. And I really do think I am at least temporarily getting tired of e-books and audiobooks, as I've been finding physical books a lot easier to get through/focus on lately. I should probably get into the habit of going to the library and checking out physical books instead of just doing e-books. Being able to download a new library e-book anywhere, anytime is certainly convenient, but I am getting sick of reading on my phone.

Hopefully more later.

Goals for Moving to Another Place

A friend and I got to talking about life changes, particularly moving, and I recalled seeing many lists of important or useful things to do after a move. This is one of those life events that can totally upend your regular goal setup, especially if you didn't anticipate the move when you made your goals. It is 100% okay to change your goals in response to changing circumstance, and better than beating up on yourself for not meeting outdated goals. So here are some ideas for goals before, during, and after a move...

We made it to the end of August! \o/ If you have completed some of your medium-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We have also finished summer. If you're doing seasonal goals, hopefully you have completed your summer batch and are about to start on fall.

These are the previous check in posts:

Picture your character visiting the doctor or dentist for an emergency -- meaning anything that's not a regular checkup or follow-up. What are they there for? Broken leg? Bad cold? Toothache? Emergency room after a car accident?

Okay, now that you've figured out the problem, write the event that caused them to go to the medical practitioner. Don't introduce the story -- just write the event, even if it's as simple as, "Mike selected a apple from the basket and bit into the firm crispy flesh. Something shifted in his gum and pain shot through his jaw. He cried out, dropping the apple."
