31 Days of Writing

6. How do you come up with names and story titles?

Names, I generally start with baby name sites and work from there. Sometimes, names just appear and they are right and I don't question. Titles... those tend to have to smack me around and really have to come to me at some point randomly decided by my brain.

7. Do you use beta reader(s)? If so, what do you look for in a beta reader? What specialties would your ideal beta have?

Beta readers, editors, you name it! If someone is willing to read and pick apart my writing they, at some point, will get it sent to them with a tear-filled plea of "OMG HALP".

Mostly, what I want is someone to tell me "This all makes sense." Because sometimes, I'm not sure if the storyline makes sense. Which means, someone else has to tell me that it does. Also, whoever reads it has to not spare my feelings. Read and give your honest damned opinion, even if that means that my feelings are hurt. I'll get over it.

8. What kind of support, if any, do you get for your writing?

Well, lets see, there's my DW circle who are quite willing to point at my word document and tell me to write. Then, there's other various people, including my brother and his husband, who are very much "GO WRITE DAMMIT." Mostly, I get told to go write. And when family visits? They do the housework and let me write. (It makes me miss living with my brother.)

6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

Tangent: Gender is merely physical. Identity is mental.

Honestly, I like writing interesting characters. Sometimes, they are male. Sometimes, female. Sometimes, that changes, depending on what happens in the story.

Give me an interesting character and I'm happy.

7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

No. well, not really. I've had fics make me think about the author's take on a character, and then, normally, go find the canon and try to find where they saw that take. But opinion changing? Not really, no.

8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

Mary Sues, Gary Stus, well-written can be fun. (Look at Polgara.) Yes, I write OCs, normally, I give them one huge flaw that comes out in a spectacular way and then retroactively put in clues in the previous text to make sure they are, well, not perfect.

Or I completely rip on them and have Legolas and Gimli kill them in the Glittering Caverns.
