After speaking with an advisor today, I've decided to drop continuing with Greek and instead switch to French. Since I need four semesters of a language, it doesn't matter which language I do.

So, that means next semester looks like this:

So today, for History, we spent time with the Special Collections at the university library. All I thought about was how you'd be horrified we weren't using gloves.

Surprisingly, gloves are not recommended when handling rare books. If you have gloves on, you can't feel the pressure you're applying when turning pages, and you might cause a lot more damage than what the oils on your skin cause (which is very little, as it turns out). They didn't even use gloves to handle the First Folios at the Folger (though hand washing was a strict rule before handling any book, to reduce the oils on the skin). That was one of my first questions when working there... I was shocked that they didn't use gloves. But when I touched a wooden sculpture, I got yelled at, because I didn't have gloves on. Who knew?

What fun!!! What kind of books did you work with? How old were they?

Mostly private diaries that were part of the Miami private collection. There were, of course, several bibles - one was a polyglot bible published by Erasmus! -and a few scientific pieces that I didn't get a good look at.

One of the private diaries was a musical diary, and had several hymns written in it, along with the music for them. Another was about the Gulf/Caribbean coasts of the Americas. That one included a map, and was very interesting.

Mostly, it was about looking at primary sources for information.

How fun was that?!???!?? So do you have an assignment that will require you to use primary sources? That map one sounds way cool.

We don't! I wish we did, but we don't, unfortunately. He just wanted us to know about the resources available. It was really interesting.

I wish we'd had more time, but... limited to class time.

Now, I might be moving to England, because my daughter isn't safe here now.
