Title: A Cage Without Bars
Prompt: Trapped
Rating: G
Summary/Warnings: None. Felicity universe.
Felicity looked around the church. Carl stood at the doorway, keeping everyone out, while she went to speak to Father Joseph. She didn’t need a full confession, just wanted his warmth and good counsel. Something that wasn’t available around the estate these days.
“Lady Felicity.” Father Joseph stepped out from his office into the sanctuary of the church. “What are you doing here, child?”
Felicity looked at him and wanted nothing more than to fall into his arms and weep. However, she knew that would solve nothing. Tears didn’t even reduce her trapped feelings and fear that this wedding would go forward. So, she held them back.
“Father Joseph.” She walked over and shared a pair of kisses on his cheeks. “I wanted to speak with you, if you have a moment?” Felicity hated placing a burden on the priest, but she needed… something. She needed someone to tell her that she was doing the right thing, obeying her father and that she wasn’t making a horrific mistake.
“For you, child, of course.” He led her over to the pews and sat next to her. “What is it, my daughter?”
Felicity took a deep breath. “Father Joseph, I have something to admit.” She whispered. Staring at her hands, she fiddled with her gloves. “The good book says ‘honor thy father’, and I try to do so, and would do anything for him, but I cannot find it in my heart to have the love for Lord Kemp that a wife should have.”
He was silent for so long that she dared to glance up at him. He was looking up at the crucifix over the main altar. “Child, you honor your father every day. Honor isn’t about blind obedience. It means making him a better man than he is and you’ve done that.”
She had? The representation of Jesus seemed to stare down at her and she felt horrible for being here and bothering an important man with her fears and insecurities. “Father Joseph –“
“And there are worse things than being married to a friend.” Father Joseph cut her off. “Much worse things.” He shrugged a bit. “Still, I suppose that there are better things too.”
His blue eyes bore into her and Felicity just lowered her eyes again to stare at her gloves. What was Father Joseph trying to say? Was she being selfish in wanting the love she read about in books? Was she being spoiled in wanting more?
Lord Kemp was a perfectly fine gentleman. They had many fine talks and he didn’t mind that she wanted to continue not only her academic studies, but her magical ones as well. He appreciated her mind, and her need to exercise it. He also agreed that she should be allowed to travel and put to use all the knowledge she had gained, especially in languages.
She supposed there were worse things than being married to a man who respected her not for her inheritance, but for her mind. “Yes, there are worse things.” Felicity agreed.
His hand patted hers. “That doesn’t mean you should lie down and accept that which troubles you, child. Just keep things in perspective.”
Felicity didn’t know how to take that, so she just nodded, and stared at her gloves. What should she do? Accept that her father wanted her married to a man that she did care for, just not as a wife should for her husband? Or should she speak up and tell her father that she didn’t want to marry yet? He’d ask for reasons and the best she could come up with was ‘we are friends’.
She got to her feet with Father Joseph. “Thank you, Father Joseph.” She reached up and kissed his cheek, before turning to head down the aisle once more.
“Go with God, my daughter.”
Felicity walked to the back of the sanctuary, where Carl was patiently waiting for her. “Carl, I’m ready to go.” She could feel a tightness in her chest, growing with every moment that brought the wedding closer.
Carl opened the door, and then opened the umbrella over her head.
The grey sky drizzled rain down on their heads as they walked down the street, where the carriage was waiting.
