Bingo Spam #5

Title: Hunger is the best motivator
Prompt: First time
Rating: G
Summary/Warnings: Backstory! Jenny/Inugo

She was hungry. Hungry, cold, tired, and hungry. Jenny watched from the corner as the farmer’s market did swift business. The day before, she’d helped them clean up and managed to get paid in a few dollars. That had gone for some food from the supermarket down the street.

That had been yesterday though. Today was another day, and she was hungry again. Hearing a noise behind her, she looked over her shoulder and hissed at the alley cat rattling the dumpster. It just flicked an ear at her.

Jenny went back to watching the farmer’s market. Some of the other kids had said that taking things wasn’t all that hard. Maybe she should try that. Some of them got food most days. They just didn’t share because she was so scrawny she was going to get sick anyway.

She always ignored them when they said things like that.

The food was just over there, and her face was mostly clean. She’d been watching other kids filch things for several months now. Maybe, if she tried, she’d not only get food, but once she got better, she’d be able to feed the others too. It couldn’t be that hard.

Jenny slid into the crowd, just another kid that was out and about at the farmer’s market. There was a school and a group home nearby; she could be mistaken for one of those kids. The crowd carried her along, past stands and stands of food on display.

Apples and pears gleamed in the sunlight. Watermelons perfumed the air as did other fragrant fruits and vegetables. She passed by a stand that sold fresh fish from the local river – why didn’t people just fish for their own? If she had a pole, a hook and some string, she would!

Walking past a stand, an apple fell off a table display and she bent down to pick it up. When she saw the owner wasn’t looking, she stuffed it into a pocket. Jenny carried on through the market. No one stopped her and she almost smiled to herself. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Over the course of an hour, Jenny managed to find several other castoffs that had fallen forgotten to the ground. She hid them all in the hood of her sweatshirt and stuffed her hands into the front pouch. Now to try for something a bit more difficult.

Maybe she was getting greedy? The older kids had told her that thieving had to be spread out. If someone got greedy, they were more likely to be caught because whatever they stole would slow them down.

Well, technically, she hadn’t stolen anything yet. Everything she had, she’d picked up off the ground. Jenny began walking through the market one more time. She passed a stand, where the woman had her back to Jenny, talking with another customer.

Without giving herself time to think, Jenny reached out and grabbed an orange and kept on walking. No one stopped her. She’d gotten away with it!

“Now, why’s a pretty little thin’ like you stealin’?”

Jenny froze and turned to look at the young man behind her. She was too surprised to deny it. The older boy – he couldn’t be more than fifteen or so – put a hand on her shoulder and began steering her out of the market.

“Come with me, chouchou. I got someone who you need t’meet.”

She finally recognized his accent. The south, somewhere. Maybe. Even though the other kids had warned her never to go off with anyone Jenny felt safer now than she had since her parents had died. So, instead of running, she just reached up into her hood and offered him an apple.

I like how she offers him the apple at the end. It says a lot about her character.
