December Orig Fic Bingo #3
Title: Bitter Cold
Prompt: Hot cocoa (or equivalent)
Rating: G
Summary/Warnings: Rissa-fic
The morning was utterly bitter outside the house. At least they had redone the insulation on the house this year. Rissa stirred the pot on the stove and looked out the window near by. She needed to get out there and see to the cows and the horses.
The water buckets would have to be broken, so that the water wasn’t frozen. She’d have to turn up the big heater out there. Normally, it kept things above freezing but seeing the snow and ice whipped around, she doubted that it was able to do that now.
A sigh, and Rissa continued stirring the pot on the stove. Soft sounds from upstairs said the kids were just waking up. She waited until her eldest stumbled downstairs, before pouring the hot cocoa into steaming mugs for her and the two girls.
“Hot chocolate?” Jenny asked, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. The eight year old inhaled deeply of the warmth and smiled. “You get all the chores done?” She asked, hopefully.
Rissa chuckled and sipped her own drink. “Not yet. Can you watch your sisters and your brother?” She asked, heading to the back door. “I’m going to have to turn up the heat in the barn and break the water on the buckets most likely. I plowed earlier, so we can get out of the driveway.”
Jenny pouted. “Yeah. Can I make oatmeal?” She asked hopefully.
Rissa began putting her outer wear on. Layers and layers went on. “Yes. There’s brown sugar in the pantry on the baking shelf, and syrup in the fridge. One or the other, not both, okay?”
Jenny nodded and very carefully began getting the pot and everything read. “Be careful, Mommy.”
Rissa walked over and kissed her daughter’s head. “I’ll make more hot chocolate when I’m done.” She promised and headed out to the barn, where the horses and cows waited.
