Another 5 drabbles.
I wrote... another 5. Someone praise me:
Thrift Store

The thrift shop glittered with light and the sounds of children on a Saturday afternoon. She wandered through, her mind occupied with the colors and sounds of the shop. She’s here to distract herself, to forget what he had done to her. She’s here to never remember. This is so far from her normal stomping grounds. Her life had taken a nosedive, but here, amongst the used windchimes, she can find herself again.
Her fingers, nails picture perfect, reached out to touch the small panda with glasses. Somehow it ended up in her hand. Sitting in her car, she smiled.
Leaves

Leaves tickle her face. She breathes shallowly, hoping that her breath can’t be seen. Hearing the sound of footsteps crunching the leaves underfoot, she closes her eyes. This can’t be the end. Not here, not now.
Hearing the feet stomping away, she lets out a careful breath. She knows the leaves stirred. She hopes her pursuer didn’t see it. She waits a little while longer, hearing the footsteps fade away.
“Can’t find her?” The rumbled question startles her with how close it is. She hadn’t heard them approach! Then, weight falls on her.
“GOT YOU!” The toddler crows. She laughs.
Travel

She waits. The silky smooth movement of the people around her transposes the jerky movements of the conveyor belt. So many people, heading to different destinations. There a reunion, out there a heartfelt goodbye.
Still, she waits. No one waits for her. Not even a cat. No one misses her, no one even knows she was gone. Burying your parent shouldn’t be a lonely prospect and yet. A deep breath. The conveyor belt creaks to life, and baggage starts coming out. Maybe she should reach out, find a person to miss her. Or maybe she should go home and sleep.
Vacation

Golden sunlight poured over her. She closes her eyes, tilting her head back. Raising her arms, she lets it permeate her. The sound of lapping water stilled her frazzled nerves, her mind that won’t settle for a moment. Birds sang in the trees, singing the sun to the other side of the world. The breeze tugged at her shirt flapping it around her.
She didn’t have anywhere to be, or anyone to see. No internet, no phone, no email, no schedule. Just her, the water and wherever weather threw at her. She couldn’t wait to open a book for fun.
Cleaning

Whoever said this was a glorious job needed to spend one day doing what I do. Endless hours of cleaning stretched in front of me. The vents needed to be scoured, as they did every other day. The pipe wouldn’t turn on while I was in here, leaving the air dry and stale.
My clean boots clattered against the metal of the room that I was in, rounded walls leading up to the vents. I was tired just standing here. Setting my bucket down, I got to work. A year of experience told me: hurry up and get it done.
