Title: The Ball
Prompt: Unacknowledged Love
Rating: PG
Summary/Warnings: None. Same universe as Wedding Jitters
The steps of the dance carried the Lady across the floor. Her dance partner spoke to her and didn’t put a finger out of place.
When the dance was done Lady Felicity was returned to her circle of friends and allowed to rest. The partner melted into the crowd once again.
He didn’t move from his spot. It was his duty to see that the Lady Felicity was taken care of and that no harm came to her. He leaned back against the wall, arms crossed over his chest. His clothes would wrinkle, but he didn’t care.
“Carl?”
Carl pushed himself off the wall and came to stand behind Lady Felicity. “Yes, m’lady?”
“Would you mind fetching me a drink?” Her bright blue eyes turned up to look at him. Alive with happiness and warmth, they sparkled in the light of the ballroom.
“Of course not, m’lady.” Carl bowed and turned away from his charge, weaving through the crowd to fetch her drink. Since the poisoning attempt last year, he didn’t trust the servants to bring it to her.
He looked around the ballroom and spotted her father dancing with one of the other ladies. Another glance turned up several people who would love to see Lord Hughes falter – or die – and who would use Lady Felicity to their own ends.
Quickly, he returned to her, handing her the drink. Her lively voice carried over the giggles of her companions. Her face was alight with happiness and contentment.
Carl retreated back into his spot along the wall. His duty was to see to the Lady Felicity and be her guard. He’d been doing that since he was twelve and she’d just been a slip of an eight year old orphan taken into Lord Hughes’ house. Carl had always felt fiercely protective of the Lady and had once wondered if the Lord was using that against him. Later, he realized it didn’t matter to him. He wanted nothing more in this life than to keep his Lady safe.
Carl stiffened seeing a very familiar man wandering through the crowd. Pushing off the wall, he intercepted the person before they could get to Lady Felicity. She’d been caused enough strain by this man.
“Get out of the way, boy.”
The growl should scare him, but it just rolled off of him without any effect at all. “The Lady isn’t receiving any visitors.” Carl kept the words low so as not to shame either of them, but there was a threat in those words that he wouldn’t allow to touch his Lady.
She’d been through enough with that former fiancé of hers.
Carl didn’t care if a man wanted to have sex with another man, but figure it out before the wedding day! Luckily, Lady Felicity had been spared most of the cruelest remarks. It hadn’t been that secret that she hadn’t been enamored with her upcoming marriage.
“I’m sure you have business that will take you elsewhere, Lord Griffin.” Carl wasn’t backing down. He wanted the little lordling to go away and leave her be. Lady Felicity was too damned nice to tell the man to shove off.
Lord Griffin looked over Carl’s shoulder and then leaned in close. “My dear boy, you’ll never, ever touch her. Shouldn’t you give up your adolescent fantasies and become an adult?”
Carl met his eyes, letting a little more malice appear in his stance and relaxing his arms to hang at his sides. “It’s time for you to leave, Lord Griffin.” The growl surprised Carl. Normally, he wasn’t one to let his emotions rule him, but this seemed appropriate. “We don’t want a scene.”
Lord Griffin eyed him, but backed off. “No, we don’t.” He bowed slightly and turned on his heel, stalking away.
“Carl? Is there a problem?”
Her voice sent shivers down his spine and he turned to see her watching him. Her dress was a pale green that made her eyes seem even greener. Her dark hair had been done up in combs that seemed impossible to contemplate.
“No, Lady Felicity. There isn’t a problem. Did you need something?” He asked, after bowing to the Lady.
“No, I just thought…” She turned to look at the dancers on the floor. “No, I don’t need anything, Carl.” Then she put on a smile and stepped onto the floor with another gentleman.
Carl just stepped back and retired once again to standing along the wall and watching.
