Her hand reached for the pen resting against the ink bottle. It was quite old fashioned, but she felt no need to change what had worked for so long, just for the sake of convenience.

Her diary had handmade pages in between a leather binding that had a beautiful geometric design etched into it. The small leather ties that held it closed showed the shininess of having been used a lot.

Every day, she pulled it off the shelf and every day she wrote something of the day in it. It might be something small – the weather, an observation – or it might be a detailed entry that took pages as she tried to recount something that had happened.

When she’d been out on patrol, she’d kept notes and transferred them to the diary upon her return. Things were quiet for now, however, and she hadn’t been on patrol in five years. She missed it.

Misa ran a hand over the warm leather and carefully eased it open. The pages fluttered in the evening breeze. She looked back over times that she’d written about. The diary began with her first day of training and contained her life after that. Before that didn’t matter. At least not to her.

She flipped a few pages, reading her handwriting as it got better and left behind the careful scratching of a child and turned to the flowing words of an adult. Misa smiled, reading of the things she’d thought so epically important at the time, and skimmed her way toward the next blank page. The diary would have to be replaced soon. It was coming to an end.

Dipping the pen into the ink, she began carefully writing about the day and how she’d accepted a different position. She’d no longer be a Lieutenant. Instead, she’d be a Captain, headed for the New World, where it’d be her duty to gather more soldiers, and train them to fight the battle she’d fought since she was fourteen.

”Today, I accepted the position and will leave behind my responsibilities here to take them up elsewhere…”
