December Bingo-Fic

Title: The Ditch
Prompt: Exhaustion
Rating: PG
Summary/Warnings: Trying out backstory for a new novel.

Clawing out of the ditch proved harder than Misa had thought it would. Her hands finally found flat land, and she forced her body to keep moving. Resting, her legs still hanging down into the ditch, she flattened herself on the clean grass.

The wind stirred and it couldn’t lift the caked hair on her face. Eventually, she made herself move more. Her leg was dead weight, so she couldn’t stand up. Looking back, she saw the arrow sticking out of her calf, covered in the thick black mud she’d just crawled out of.

She couldn’t stop now, though. She had to keep going. Broken nails dug into the ground and began pulling her toward the road. Misa collapsed near the edge of the road.

Rolling over, she stared at the bright blue sky, hating that it was still so bright, especially after the darkness she’d been through. One shaking hand rose to scrape mud clumps from her face. She stilled her breathing, trying to listen for other people.

How far had she been thrown? How far away from her patrol was she?

Misa clawed her way to her feet and began stumbling down the road. She tried to remember where they’d been, but her head pounded and she knew that some of the stickiness on her face wasn’t mud. Fatigue dragged at her limbs, but she refused to sit down and rest.

The demons had been particularly strong. She wished that she had listened to her reason and sent for help, before attacking. They’d only been a small patrol; now who knew how many were left? Misa cursed her own pigheadedness. If she’d been more cautious…

“Lieutenant!”

The yell jerked her head up and she swayed where she stood. Her body refused to hold her upright at the sudden movement, and her knees buckled, depositing her in the middle of the road.

“Lieutenant! You’re alive! Hold on, we’ll get you home….”

That was the last she heard before her exhaustion and injuries dragged her under.
