“What is it?” Jen asked, sitting across the small stream from some sort of girl.
Blonde hair cascaded over the girl’s shoulders, reaching almost to her waist. She wore a bright green dress and her feet were bare.
“I dunno.” Tara’s six year old wisdom didn’t extend to random girls in the woods. “Maybe she lives over at the old Adler place?”
Jen frowned. Her own ten-year-old wisdom also didn’t cover random barefooted girls in the woods. Instead, she turned to look at the large black canine gnawing on a bone next to them. “Kyrette?” She asked, drawing his attention. “Do you know what it is?”
The varill lifted his head, his nose working as the wind picked up. His ears twitched back and forth. He pushed himself to his feet, his head cocked to the side. *It smells… like earth.*
Well, that didn’t make any sense. “But she’s a girl.” Tara pointed it out, so Jen didn’t have to. “I can see that she’s a girl.”
“Tara!” Jen hissed her sister’s name and grabbed Tara’s arm.
Across the stream, the girl had spread wings and fluttered up to a branch in one of the trees. Giggles floated toward them as it looked like the girl tickled the tree that seemed to shake with its own giggles.
That was ridiculous, though. It was a tree. Trees didn’t giggle.
Sure, her mother said she had a lot to learn, but she knew that!
“Ky-Kyrette…?” She whispered.
He turned and jerked his snout back toward the farm. *Go.*
Tara stood as well. “But… she’s a fairy! Fairies aren’t bad.”
Jen turned to look at her younger sister. “Fairies are not real, Tar.” She pointed out with all the superiority of being four years older.
“Yeah? Dragons aren’t either and there’s one living with us. Same with talking dogs.” She pointed accusingly at Kyrette.
Jen couldn’t argue with that. She looked at Kyrette who was still focused on the girl across the stream.
*I’m not a dog.* The correction sounded absent, like he wasn’t paying a lot of attention. *Back to the farm.*
Jen sighed and took Tara’s hand. “C’mon. We gotta tell Mom anyway.” She dragged her sister ahead, leaving Kyrette behind a bit. “You really think she’s a fairy?” Her sister understood fairies better than her. Tara had been Tinkerbell for Halloween last year.
Tara nodded, looking serious. “She was talking to the tree. That’s what fairies do. Remember that movie Mom let us watch about the rain forest? All those fairies talked to plants. Trees are just big plants.”
Well, that made sense. Jen looked back over her shoulder. “Do fairies and dragons get along?” She asked.
