Jen was working at her math at the table. Next to her Tara worked on her own science worksheet. The younger pair was playing in the living room in plain sight.

Rissa did the dishes, humming to herself. Floating in through the screen door, she could hear the soft stamp of a cow, or nicker of a horse. Here and there, crickets joined the nightly chorus, singing to one another.

Other sounds had begun to become commonplace. She could hear the gentle rasp of metal against stone – Lady Guir sharpening something. The soft snip of scissors – Fyre either sewing or mending something; the scrape of scales against wood – Teril probably flicking his tail. There came a gentle rumble of low voices; the three men – Teril (even though he was a dragon), Caryl (Guir’s husband) and Stone (Fyre’s mate) – were probably taking advantage of the women being out front and having ‘man time’. Whatever the hell that was.

“Mom? I don’t understand this.”

Rissa dried her hands on the towel over her shoulder and turned to help Jen. She sat at the table and began talking the ten year old through the math. Considering she’d always had trouble, she wasn’t surprised her daughter did too. Some things were just hereditary.

Pushing herself up, Rissa went to check on her twins and began the nightly clean up.

Even with more people living here, she maintained a rigid schedule. It was the only way that anything got done. She had four kids. A schedule was the only way she survived.

Her mind knew what came next, just from the years of doing it time and time again. She could do all this half-dead from pneumonia. And had.

The house cleaned and children in bed, Rissa turned toward the evening barn chores, baby monitor strapped to her hip. She barely murmured a word as she passed the two women on the porch. They both seemed content to soak up the silence tonight.

Entering the barn, Rissa stopped and took a deep breath. All her life, the smell of manure and warmth in the barn had meant security for her.

If there was anything in paradise waiting for her, she doubted she’d know the difference. Humming to herself, she walked down the aisle, perfectly content.
