“COMMANDER!”

Ryuusuke’s head jerked up. Something was wrong. The bottom of his stomach dropped and he bolted around his desk, his sword in his hand and sliding through his belt. He ripped open his office door and almost plowed into one of the officers of his division.

His hands lashed out, carefully steadying her. “What happened?”

“Miyu… Head Division…”

Ryuusuke didn’t let her catch her breath. Instead, he released her and stepped around her, heading for the Head Division’s headquarters. If his wife was there, then something had really gone wrong. He’d thought her staying at the estate today. She had the day off and had said something about spending it with her little sister, Hina.

He couldn’t believe that one of the other noble houses would have attacked, but stranger things had happened. And really, he wouldn’t put anything past the Metsumi clan any longer. Not after their last marriage proposal for Hina.

Ryuusuke did not stalk. He did not hurry. However, the head of the Oshiro clan had a presence about him that meant people got out of his way. He also had a way of moving that looked intimidating and was quite fast.

The gates to the Head Division’s headquarters creaked open as he arrived. He didn’t break stride and continued on to the main building. He could see the First Commander standing on the steps, his wrinkled hands crossed over the head of his cane.

Ryuusuke stopped and bowed as was proper. “I was told my…”

“Come with me, Ryuusuke.” The First Commander turned away and led him into the building.

A cold knot formed in his stomach. The First Commander hadn’t called him Ryuusuke since he’d graduated the Academy and joined the Guardians.

He followed the older man back into a small room. There, a blanket over her body, lay his wife. She lay completely still, her chest not rising and falling. There weren’t any healers around. Her hands had been folded over her stomach and her eyes were closed. Her sword lay next to her on the table.

Ryuusuke walked forward and stopped, staring down at her. His hand reached out, gently brushing her bangs into the correct arrangement. His other hand rose and removed the scarf around his neck – it was a symbol of his clan, something worn only by the head of the clan and his wife. She wasn’t wearing hers and her neck looked naked without it.

Gently, he draped it over her neck. Then, he bent down and kissed her cold cheek.

“Someone send for Riku.” He commanded. Later, he would find out how.

His wife was dead.
