Title: Family Tree

“No. Really.”
Why was it that whenever she explained her family, people didn’t believe her? Sure, she had six sisters and two brothers. Sure, her father wasn’t even on the planetoid. And, okay, so her uncle ran the military troops that rented space on this planetoid, but that didn’t make her family strange or anything did it?
Okay, so her family included dragons, part dragons, a black panther that talked, giant birds of prey, at least a couple of werewolves, a dire wolf, a regular wolf, plus several other species that she was forgetting.
Oh yeah, and her Mom? Her Mom was the Queen.
But that still meant that they were a normal family! Actually, in terms of the Moon, their family was the poster child of normal. Look at her Aunt Heather, married to a bipedal dragon the last fifteen years. Or at her eldest sister, married to a werewolf. Or her second eldest sister dating – living with, or whatever it was they were doing – a mage.
“Look, it’s not that complicated.” Reja pulled out a fresh set of paper and took the pencil out of her friend’s hand. “Mom was married to Robbie. She had Riah and Brenda. They divorced and she married Aaron. Then she had the twins, AJ and Jas.” She began drawing the complicated family tree slowly, explaining as she went.
“Then, she married my sperm donor.”
Reja didn’t like her father much.
“She had me and Dru, then Jorrin, and finally Michaela.” She finished writing in names. “Then, after she kicked my father off the Moon, she had Myra with Uncle Garth.” Reja held up the family tree proudly. “See? It’s simple!”
Her friend, a guy named Frank, shook his head. “How is that simple? Doesn’t Myra being the Commander’s daughter mean she’s related to however many kids he has?”
Reja flopped on her stomach. “There’s a reason we call him Uncle. Makes everything easier.”
Frank leaned back on his hands, staring up at the blue orb of the Earth. They were enjoying warm spring weather and the rare peace that usually characterized the calm before the storm.
“Reja, you know your family really is complex, right?”
She rolled her eyes. “It’s family. Sometimes they’re annoying, loud and in my face. Sometimes, they actually back off and let me be me.” Reja braced her chin on her hands. “But they’re family. Nothing else matters.”
“I get that, Rej.” Frank flopped backwards. “But my family is me, Mom, Dad, my little sister and a couple of uncles we only see once or twice a year when we can convince them to come for a visit.” He didn’t know why they didn’t go back to Earth, but didn’t really care either. “Your family is complicated.” He smiled and looked over at her, nudging her in the hip. “You’re sure they’re gonna be okay with adding me to it?”
Reja sat up and shifted so her head was near his, instead of at his feet. “Mom’ll huff. And interrogate you. She’ll probably crack jokes about being too young or tell you that if you hurt me, she’s got dibs on your hide.” Her fingers laced with his. “Aunt Hen, Uncle Garth and Uncle Ran will back her up. Aunt Andi will agree with them, most likely. But in the end? It all comes down to my choice. And I choose you, Dorkichu.”
He rolled his eyes and she laughed.
“Just one big happy family huh?”
“Emphasis on the big, but yep.” Reja blinked. “Oh, but there is one person I need to warn you about.” She sat up. “Auntie E is… well, she’s family.”
